018 Inner Hebrides

The Inner Hebrides The Inner Hebrides off the West Coast of Scotland comprises some  79  islands of which 36 are inhabited and a further 43 are uninhabited islands.  Some of the larger and better known islands include Skye, Mull, Islay, Gigha, Tiree & Coll.  I discuss the magic of island hopping and the joy of using the ferries between the islands to enjoy seeing the Scottish landscape from the sea.   Island hopping in Scotland lends itself really well to cycling vacations as bicycles go free on all the ferry routes.  Ferries routes are increasingly subsidised within the Inner Hebrides making the islands more affordable to visit and more economically integrated into mainland Scotland. I also talk in more detail about my excitement and anticipation about visiting Tiree next week.   I mentioned Tiree before in Episode 003 of Passing Places when discussing wild camping.  Tiree has an excellent scheme in place to allow motorhomes and campervans to visit the island without putting undue pressure on the fragile ecosystem.
